How Do You Rank in ChatGPT?
There is no fixed ranking in ChatGPT, so “how to rank in ChatGPT” really means how to get your brand mentioned and your pages cited in its answers. Three things make that possible: allowing OpenAI’s search crawler to access your site, publishing clear content that answers specific questions, and being mentioned by other sources the model trusts.
| Lever | What to do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Access | Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and at your firewall | Required for eligibility in ChatGPT search |
| Indexing elsewhere | Be indexed on Bing and Google | ChatGPT also uses partner search providers |
| Content | Direct answers to specific questions | Passages get quoted |
| Evidence | Authors, dates, sources, original data | Signals reliability |
| Entity clarity | Consistent brand facts everywhere | Reduces errors in how you are described |
| Third-party coverage | Reviews, press, lists, directories | The model draws on many sources |
The access requirement comes from OpenAI’s own help page on ChatGPT search. The rest is how retrieval-based answers work in general.
How Does ChatGPT Find Information?
ChatGPT answers from two sources.
- Training data: what the model learned before its knowledge cutoff. You cannot change this directly, and it updates only when a new model is trained.
- Live web search: when the question needs current information, or the user asks it to search, ChatGPT runs searches, reads pages and cites them.
OpenAI describes the search process. ChatGPT typically rewrites a question into one or more targeted search queries. It may send further, more specific queries after seeing initial results. Responses that use web search may include citations.
The second route is where you can act.
Does ChatGPT Have a Ranking Algorithm?
Not in the sense of a stable list of positions. Each answer is generated afresh. Two people asking the same question can receive different wording and different sources.
OpenAI says ChatGPT search ranks results using multiple factors intended to help users find relevant, reliable information, and that placement is not guaranteed. It does not publish those factors.
So think in probabilities. Your aim is to raise how often you appear across many related prompts, not to hold “position one”.
How Do You Give ChatGPT Access?
Access is the first requirement. OpenAI states that for a site to be eligible to appear in ChatGPT search, it must allow OAI-SearchBot to crawl it, and the host or CDN must allow traffic from OpenAI’s published IP addresses.
Check:
- robots.txt. Look for rules that disallow OAI-SearchBot, or a blanket block on unknown bots.
- Firewall, CDN and bot-protection settings. Many security tools block AI crawlers by default.
- Server logs. Is the crawler reaching your pages and receiving a 200 response?
- Rendering. Serve content as HTML. Do not assume the crawler runs JavaScript.
OpenAI operates separate crawlers for different purposes, including one for model training. You can treat them differently. See the next section, and our guide to robots.txt optimization.
Should You Allow GPTBot?
GPTBot is OpenAI’s crawler for collecting content that may be used to train its models. It is separate from OAI-SearchBot, which powers search results.
| Crawler | Purpose | If you block it |
|---|---|---|
| OAI-SearchBot | Surfaces sites in ChatGPT search | You are not eligible for ChatGPT search results |
| GPTBot | Model training | Your content is not collected for training |
| ChatGPT-User | Fetches a page when a user asks | ChatGPT may be unable to open your page on request |
The decision on GPTBot is yours.
- Allowing it may help future models know about your brand and products.
- Blocking it keeps your content out of training, which matters to publishers and others who license content.
Blocking GPTBot does not remove you from ChatGPT search, as long as OAI-SearchBot is allowed. Check OpenAI’s current crawler documentation, since names and behaviour can change.
Want your brand cited in AI answers?
Our AI search optimization work covers content structure, schema and E-E-A-T signals, measured every month.
See AI search optimizationWhat Content Gets Cited?
Content gets cited when it answers the specific question clearly and looks reliable.
- Match real questions. Long, specific prompts are common. Cover use cases, comparisons, pricing and “how do I” questions.
- Answer first. Put a direct, self-contained answer under each heading.
- Be concrete. Numbers, names, specifications, dates.
- Keep facts in text, not in images or behind tabs that need a click.
- Show who wrote it, and cite sources.
- Keep it current. State when the page was last reviewed.
- Publish what only you have: original data, tested results, detailed documentation.
- Use structured data that matches the visible page.
Pages that work well include product and pricing pages, comparison pages, how-to guides, FAQs with real questions and research with clear findings. Our guide to answer engine optimization covers the format.
Why Does Third-Party Coverage Matter?
When ChatGPT answers “what is the best project tool for architects?”, it does not rely on any one company’s own claims. It draws on reviews, comparison articles, forums and directories.
To be named, be present where those opinions form.
- Review platforms relevant to your industry.
- Comparison and “best of” articles by independent publishers.
- Trade press and expert commentary.
- Community discussions where your product is recommended.
- Reference sources and well-kept business profiles.
- Partner and integration directories.
Earn these legitimately. Our guide to digital PR explains how. Keep your brand name, description and key facts consistent across all of them.
Does Ranking on Google or Bing Help?
Yes. OpenAI says ChatGPT search sometimes partners with other search providers. A page that search engines cannot find or do not index is less likely to be retrieved.
- Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools, and submit a sitemap.
- Keep your Google indexing healthy. Google applies the same logic to its own AI features: a page must be indexed to be used.
- Maintain normal SEO: titles, internal links, speed.
See our article on Bing and ChatGPT.
How Do You Check If ChatGPT Mentions Your Brand?
Test it systematically.
- Write 20 to 30 prompts your customers would use: category questions, comparisons, problems you solve and questions about your brand.
- Run each prompt several times, in a new chat, with search enabled.
- Record: were you mentioned, how were you described, which sources were cited, which competitors appeared?
- Repeat monthly, with the same prompts.
- Check analytics for referral visits from chatgpt.com.
Answers vary between runs, so one result proves little. Look at the share of runs in which you appear. Our guide to AI visibility tracking gives a full method.
What If ChatGPT Describes You Wrongly?
Find where the wrong information comes from.
- Check the citations. Correct the source page if it is yours; ask the owner if it is not.
- State the facts plainly on your own site: what you do, prices, locations, founding date.
- Update business profiles and directory entries.
- Use the feedback controls in ChatGPT to flag errors.
OpenAI notes that search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated or incorrect. Clear and consistent public information is your best protection.
What Does Not Work?
- Hidden instructions addressed to the AI. This is deceptive, and risks your standing in ordinary search.
- Keyword stuffing for prompts.
- Mass-producing AI articles about yourself.
- Paying for “guaranteed ChatGPT placement”.
- Blocking all bots, then expecting to be cited.
- Judging success from one prompt run.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does ChatGPT have a ranking algorithm?
Not a fixed one that produces stable positions. Each answer is generated anew, and results vary between runs and users. OpenAI says search results are ranked using multiple factors intended to surface relevant, reliable information, and that placement is not guaranteed. Think in terms of how often you appear.
Should I allow GPTBot to crawl my site?
It is your choice. GPTBot collects content for training OpenAI’s models. Allowing it may help future models know your brand; blocking it keeps your content out of training. For visibility in ChatGPT search, the crawler that must be allowed is OAI-SearchBot, which is separate.
How do I check if ChatGPT mentions my brand?
Write a set of prompts your customers would ask, run each several times in new chats with search on, and record whether you are mentioned and which sources are cited. Repeat monthly. Also check your analytics for referral visits from chatgpt.com.
Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?
OpenAI says placement in ChatGPT search results is not guaranteed, and it describes eligibility in terms of crawler access and relevance. Be sceptical of any third party selling guaranteed inclusion. Check OpenAI’s own documentation for the current position on any advertising products.
How long does it take to appear in ChatGPT?
For answers that use live web search, changes can show once your pages are crawled and indexed, often within days or weeks. Knowledge built into the model changes only when a new model is trained. Building third-party mentions takes months. Track a fixed prompt set over a quarter.
