What Changes When You Target Baidu?
Baidu SEO differs from Google SEO in four main ways: content must be in Simplified Chinese, the site should be hosted in or near mainland China, an ICP filing is required to host there, and Baidu’s own platforms take up much of the results page. It is a market-entry project needing local expertise.
| Baidu | ||
|---|---|---|
| Main market | Most of the world | Mainland China |
| Language | Any | Simplified Chinese strongly preferred |
| Hosting | Anywhere | Mainland China preferred; needs an ICP filing |
| Webmaster tool | Search Console | Baidu Search Resource Platform |
| Results page | Mostly third-party sites, plus features | Heavy presence of Baidu’s own properties |
| JavaScript rendering | Supported | Limited; serve HTML |
| Documentation | Extensive, in many languages | In Chinese |
This overview is orientation for decision-makers. Baidu publishes its guidance in Chinese on the Baidu Search Resource Platform, and rules change. Confirm every requirement with a qualified local partner before investing.
Should Your Brand Target Baidu at All?
Target Baidu only if mainland China is a real market for you. Google is not generally available there, so a strong Google presence does not carry over.
Ask first:
- Do you have customers, distributors or legal presence in mainland China?
- Can you support Chinese-language sales, payment and service?
- Are you prepared for the legal and hosting requirements?
- Is search the right channel? Many Chinese consumers find products inside marketplaces and social apps, not through web search.
StatCounter’s worldwide figures show Baidu with under 1% of global search, because its use is concentrated in one country. Within China, the picture is entirely different. Check current country-level data before deciding.
What Language Does Baidu Favour?
Baidu is built for Chinese. Write in Simplified Chinese, which is used in mainland China, not Traditional Chinese, which is used in Taiwan and Hong Kong.
- Translate with native writers. Machine translation reads poorly and performs poorly.
- Localise, do not just translate: examples, units, payment methods, contact channels.
- Research keywords in Chinese. Terms do not map one to one from English.
- Write titles and descriptions in Chinese.
- Avoid mixed-language pages.
What Is an ICP Filing, and Do You Need One?
An ICP filing is a registration with Chinese authorities that is required to host a website on servers in mainland China. The filing number appears in the site’s footer. China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology runs the filing system.
Key points:
- A filing generally requires a business entity registered in China, or a local partner who holds it.
- Commercial sites that sell online need a further commercial licence.
- Without a filing, mainland hosting providers and content delivery networks will not serve your site.
A site hosted outside China can still be indexed by Baidu. It will usually load more slowly for users there and may be at a disadvantage against locally hosted competitors. Nearby locations such as Hong Kong are a common compromise when a filing is not possible.
Take legal advice. Requirements are a regulatory matter, not an SEO choice.
How Do Hosting and Speed Affect Baidu SEO?
Speed inside China is a major practical factor. Cross-border connections are slower and less reliable, so a site that is fast in Europe may be slow in Shanghai.
- Host in mainland China if you can, or as close as possible if not.
- Use a content delivery network with nodes in China, which itself needs a filing.
- Remove dependencies on blocked services. Scripts, fonts, maps and videos loaded from blocked platforms may hang and delay the whole page.
- Test loading from within China, using a testing service with mainland locations.

See our SEO servicesWhich Technical Points Differ?
Several technical habits from Google work differently.
- Serve content as HTML. Baidu’s crawler handles JavaScript far less capably than Google’s. Do not rely on client-side rendering.
- Keep URLs simple and the site structure shallow.
- Use HTTPS; Baidu supports it.
- Submit your site and sitemaps through the Baidu Search Resource Platform, which offers URL submission tools.
- Do not rely on hreflang for Baidu. It is a signal Google and Yandex document; plan a separate Chinese site or section instead.
- Mobile matters greatly. Most Chinese internet use is on phones.
- Titles and meta descriptions are used prominently; write them carefully in Chinese.
Verify each of these against Baidu’s current documentation, since its capabilities evolve.
How Is the Baidu Results Page Different?
Baidu’s results give considerable space to its own services: an encyclopedia, a question-and-answer platform, a document-sharing site, a forum and others, as well as paid listings.
Consequences:
- Fewer positions are open to independent websites.
- Presence on Baidu’s own platforms matters. A brand entry in its encyclopedia or answers on its Q&A platform can occupy valuable space.
- Paid and organic results are harder to tell apart than on Google.
- Trust badges and verified business status carry weight with users.
An SEO plan for Baidu therefore includes content on Baidu’s own properties, not only on your website.
Do Links Still Matter on Baidu?
Yes. Baidu uses links as a signal, and like Google it has run algorithm updates against link manipulation. Links from reputable Chinese-language sites are what count.
Earn them through Chinese-language PR, partnerships, industry directories and useful content. Links from English sites help little. Avoid purchased link packages, which are widely sold and carry the usual risks.
What About Content Rules?
Content published in China must comply with local law. Certain topics are restricted, and platforms can remove content or sites that breach the rules.
Have Chinese content reviewed by someone who understands both the language and the regulations. Industries such as healthcare, finance and education face additional advertising rules.
Which Tools Do You Need?
| Purpose | Tool |
|---|---|
| Webmaster data and submission | Baidu Search Resource Platform |
| Analytics | Baidu Tongji, or another analytics tool that loads reliably in China |
| Keyword demand | Baidu’s keyword tools and index |
| Speed testing | A service with mainland China test locations |
Most interfaces are in Chinese only, which is another reason to work with a native-speaking specialist.
What Is a Realistic Plan?
- Confirm the business case for China.
- Take legal advice on entity, filing and licences.
- Decide hosting based on that advice.
- Research keywords in Chinese.
- Build a Chinese site or section with localised content, rendered as HTML.
- Remove blocked third-party resources.
- Register with Baidu’s platform, and submit the site.
- Create a presence on Baidu’s own properties.
- Earn Chinese-language links and coverage.
- Measure, and adjust.
Consider marketplaces and social platforms alongside search; for many products they matter more. For other regional engines, see our search engines list and our guide to Yandex SEO.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need an ICP licence to rank on Baidu?
Not strictly to be indexed, but in practice it matters. An ICP filing is required to host a site in mainland China, and local hosting brings much better speed there. Sites hosted abroad can appear in Baidu, usually at a disadvantage. Take legal advice on what your business needs.
Does Baidu index sites hosted outside China?
Yes, it can. Sites hosted elsewhere are crawled and indexed, but they often load slowly for users in mainland China, and crawling can be less reliable across the border. Hosting nearby, such as in Hong Kong, is a common compromise when mainland hosting is not possible.
Does Baidu support hreflang?
Do not rely on it. Hreflang is documented by Google and Yandex as a way to indicate language versions. For Baidu, build a dedicated Simplified Chinese site or section, with its own keyword research and content, and submit it directly through Baidu’s webmaster platform.
Can I use my English site for Baidu?
Realistically, no. Baidu serves Chinese-speaking users and strongly favours Simplified Chinese content. An English site may be indexed but will rarely rank for the searches Chinese customers make. You need localised Chinese content written by native speakers, on a dedicated Chinese site or section.
Is Baidu the only search engine in China?
No. It is the largest, but other domestic search engines hold meaningful shares, and their positions change. Many Chinese consumers also search within marketplaces, social apps and video platforms. Plan for the whole ecosystem, with search as one part, and review the mix with a local partner each year.
